BA (hons) Chinese &  English Degree Course - 3 Years

Overview

China plays an important role on the global stage and is one of the world’s largest economies. This degree combines core and optional modules allowing you to become proficient in a major world language while gaining a broader understanding of the history and culture of China and East Asia as a whole. We teach Chinese from beginners’ level, but if you already have some knowledge of the subject we can normally accommodate you.

This prestigious degree allows you to explore the full range of poetry, prose and drama in English, from Old English and medieval literature to contemporary writing from around the world. Core and optional modules will give you a good grounding in the development of literature in English over time as well as specialist knowledge of topics that interest you. From Arthurian legends to Shakespeare to postcolonial fiction, there’s plenty of variety to choose from.

Course Content

A Joint Honours degree allows you to study the same core topics as students on each Single Honours course, but you’ll take fewer options and discovery modules so you can fit in both subjects. You’ll study one of our Cornerstone modules in Year 1 to draw your two subjects together, and apply your knowledge and skills to a major research project in either subject in your final year.

Chinese

In your first year core modules will develop your Chinese language skills. You’ll also choose from optional modules introducing Chinese history, culture and religious traditions. .

English

In your first year you’ll choose from core modules exploring poetry, prose and drama through time. You may have the chance to study optional modules in English. Over the next two years you’ll develop your knowledge and skills through a choice of core modules focusing on different literary periods from the medieval period to today, and you may be able to choose optional modules on topics such as the language of the media
